Session Descriptions

Behavioral strategies to manage challenging behaviors

Behavior problems impact many children with Down syndrome. This presentation will review brain development and areas of the brain affected by developmental delays in Down syndrome, expression of these brain differences in day to day life, and how this expression impacts behaviors. Proactive strategies to address behaviors observed in children and adults with Down syndrome will be discussed as well as ways to critically assess the function of challenging behaviors.

Teaching good boundaries

Self-awareness about one’s body in space requires complex physical, emotional, and cognitive awareness skills to navigate different social settings and relationships. While some individuals may have a stronger skill set with defining these limits, others may struggle. This presentation will identify the different skills necessary to navigate social boundaries at different stages of development. Strategies for teaching healthy boundaries at all developmental stages will be taught.

School behavioral plans and advocacy in the schools

Hearing about challenging behaviors in a school setting can be stressful for families. This presentation will provide an explanation of typical behaviors exhibited in a school setting, the reason why these behaviors can occur, and how to advocate for appropriate supports for your child within the school setting to address these behaviors.
